Comparison of Strategies for Serving Two Streams of Jobs

چکیده
Highly varying job demands generally consist of many short jobs mixed with several long jobs. In this paper, we consider a simple scenario where two job streams with different level of demands must be processed by the same server. We study the performance of several round-robin variants and FCFSP in such a scenario. The simulation results show that on the one hand, by employing immediate preemption to favor newly arrived jobs, round-robin can effectively reduce the mean response time for the short-job stream, while only slightly increasing the response time for the longjob stream. On the other hand, by assuming the availability of job stream information and always favoring the short-job stream, FCFSP may improve performance. However, to further improve performance, other information if available (e.g., the characteristics of each individual stream) should be considered.

متن کاملOrder Admission and Optimal Pricing for Regular Jobs and Big Deals at a Service Company
This paper studies optimal pricing and demand management policies for a firm that faces two streams of order types: one is composed of recurring regular jobs with pre-determined prices (exogenous prices) and the other involves big deals that require pricing proposals (endogenous prices). The probability to secure the big deals diminishes with the quoted price. The authors develop and compare op...
متن کاملErosion Hazard Index Methodology (EHIM) for Streams Erodibility Assessment (Ardabil-Province)
An erosion hazard index methodology (EHIM) was developed for assessing stream erosion. The index of stream erosion is designed as a management tool. Assessing stream erosion involves consideration of a range of aspects of streams and a value judgment about a desirable state. The assessment of the erosion indicators of streams was based on a state-wide assessment of physical stream condition. A ...
متن کاملA Model For The Residence Time Distribution and Holdup Measurement in a Two Impinging Streams Cyclone Reactor/Contactor in Solid-Liquid Systems
In this paper a two impinging streams cyclone contacting system suitable for handling of solid-liquid systems has been studied. Certain pertinent parameters such as: solid holdup, mean residence time and Residence Time Distribution (RTD) of solid particles have been investigated. A stochastic model based on Markov chains processes has been applied which describe the behavior of solid partic...
متن کاملA bi-objective model for a scheduling problem of unrelated parallel batch processing machines with fuzzy parameters by two fuzzy multi-objective meta-heuristics
This paper considers a bi-objective model for a scheduling problem of unrelated parallel batch processing machines to minimize the makespan and maximum tardiness, simultaneously. Each job has a specific size and the data corresponding to its ready time, due date and processing time-dependent machine are uncertain and determined by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Each machine has a specific capacity,...
